2. 2Nepal · BagmatiKathmandu Valley & Nagarkot2,175 m, easy, 3–4 days.Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Durbar Squares, and a Himalayan sunrise from Nagarkot.Best months: Oct, Nov, Dec, Feb, Mar, Apr · Why not: City traffic and dust; the mountains are a view, not an experience.
3. 3Nepal · Rupandehi, LumbiniLumbini180 m, easy, 2–3 days.The birthplace of the Buddha, with the Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar and a monastic zone of world temples.Best months: Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar · Why not: Very hot from April to June; the monastic zone is spread out and needs cycling or a rickshaw.

5. 5Assam · KamrupGuwahati & Kamakhya250 m, easy, 1–2 days.The Kamakhya Shakti Peeth on Nilachal hill, Brahmaputra cruises and Umananda island.Best months: Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar · Why not: A big city; Kamakhya queues are very long on festival days.
6. 6Uttarakhand · Almora, KumaonJageshwar Dham1,900 m, easy, 1–2 days.A cluster of over 100 ancient stone temples inside a deodar forest, dating to the 8th–12th century.Best months: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct, Nov · Why not: Small — a half day is enough unless you combine it with a nearby trek.
7. 7Sikkim · West SikkimPelling2,150 m, easy, 3–4 days.A ridge town facing Kanchenjunga, with Pemayangtse monastery, Rabdentse ruins and a glass skywalk.Best months: Mar, Apr, Oct, Nov, Dec · Why not: Clouds hide the peak for days at a time outside October–December and March–April.
8. 8Sikkim · Namchi, South SikkimRavangla2,200 m, easy, 2–3 days.A ridge town with the giant Buddha Park, tea gardens below and Kanchenjunga views.Best months: Mar, Apr, May, Oct, Nov, Dec · Why not: A day or two is plenty.
9. 9Uttarakhand · Tehri Garhwal / DehradunRishikesh600 m, easy, 2–4 days.Yoga capital in the Himalayan foothills — ashrams, Ganga aarti, river rafting.Best months: Feb, Mar, Apr, Oct, Nov · Why not: It is the foothills, not the high mountains — no snow, and it gets hot from May.
10. 10Nepal · Kathmandu Valley, BagmatiBhaktapur & Patan1,400 m, easy, 2–3 days.The two best-preserved Newari cities in the valley — Durbar Squares, courtyards and metalwork alleys.Best months: Oct, Nov, Dec, Feb, Mar, Apr · Why not: Entry fees for non-Nepalis are steep, and both squares are earthquake-restoring in places.
11. 11Uttarakhand · Nainital, KumaonBhimtal & Naukuchiatal1,400 m, easy, 2–3 days.Two quieter Kumaon lakes 20 minutes below Nainital, with paragliding and lakeside cottages.Best months: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct, Nov · Why not: Less to do in town; you'll want a vehicle.
12. 12Himachal · SolanChail2,250 m, easy, 2 days.A former princely summer capital with the world's highest cricket ground and deodar forest all around.Best months: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct, Nov · Why not: Small; the palace and cricket ground are the main draws.
13. 13Himachal · ChambaDalhousie & Khajjiar2,340 m, easy, 3–4 days.Five hills of colonial charm plus the 'Mini Switzerland' meadow of Khajjiar at 1,920 m.Best months: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct, Nov · Why not: Far from everything else; a long detour from Manali or Shimla.

16. 16Assam · Golaghat & NagaonKaziranga National Park80 m, easy, 3 days.UNESCO-listed grassland home to most of the world's one-horned rhinos, plus tigers, elephants and wild buffalo.Best months: Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr · Why not: Not mountains — it's the Brahmaputra floodplain, and it closes in the monsoon.

18. 18Meghalaya · East Khasi HillsMawlynnong900 m, easy, 2 days.A spotless Khasi village with a living root bridge and a bamboo sky-view tower over Bangladesh.Best months: Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr · Why not: Busy with day-trippers by late morning.
19. 19Darjeeling hills · Darjeeling, West BengalMirik1,600 m, easy, 2 days.A lake town ringed by tea gardens and orange orchards, near the Nepal border.Best months: Mar, Apr, May, Oct, Nov, Dec · Why not: Small — most people only spend a few hours.
20. 20Uttarakhand · Nainital, KumaonNainital2,615 m, easy, 3–4 days.The classic Kumaon lake town — Naini Lake, the Mall Road, Snow View and Naina Peak.Best months: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct, Nov · Why not: Very crowded in summer and on long weekends; parking is a nightmare.
